Is Illinois Ready For Same Day Voter Registration?

Starting off the 98th Session by acting against election integrity in Illinois, Deputy Majority Leader and Representative Lou Lang (D)16th District introduced House Bill 68 in the Illinois House. This bill, if passed, will require all election jurisdictions in Illinois to offer in-precinct voter registration on Election Day. Effectively, election judges will also register voters. If passed, House Bill 68 is effective immediately!

“The board shall provide for precinct registration on election day. A person registering on election day must be a resident of the precinct in which he or she registers.”

The Bill was introduced on January 9th, 2013; first read on the 9th and then referred to the Rules Committee, where Lou Lang is one of 5 members.

House Bill 68 was discussed at Tuesday’s Chicago Board of Elections meeting. During Legal Report, General Counsel James Scanlon brought the matter to the attention of the three Chicago Commissioners.

In summary, the Chicago Commissioners are not pleased. The bill was introduced last week and is now in committee. The Bill will necessitate all election jurisdictions upgrade to electronic poll books. Electronic poll books would then have to be coordinated with the statewide database of registered voters. This database currently exists but is not updated in real-time. In Illinois, local election jurisdictions’ voter registration records are not kept in a single source data file. Each jurisdiction has its own data system. Currently, they are required to send periodic updates to the State Board of Elections database.

During the Board meeting, Chairman Landon Neal states that the cost for Chicago to upgrade to electronic poll books is over 4 million dollars.

Commissioner Cowen requested the staff provide feedback on the implication of this bill.

Executive Director Lance Gough ends the conversation by stating that other states that have same day in-precinct registration are trying to step back from it.

Illinois voters need to act to defeat this measure. Contact your Representatives and Senators and let them know this is not a good idea. Also, contact your elected County Clerk or Commissioners. Let them know you do not favor this. This Bill requires changes local election jurisdictions are not prepared for!

The action has just started. We will provide more information on this measure next week.

Is the agenda of the 98th Illinois Legislative Session to further erode the security of the vote in Illinois? There is no better way to erode election security than to force same day voter registration on election judges who have the primary responsibility on Election Day to administer the vote.

    Why not, the election process and the candidacy procedures are already an absolute farce in a supposed Democratic Election System. The Precincts never check or require an ID for the voter nor as the Judges say, “do they want to”. This system allows the Chicago machine to add 400,000 Dead Voters as necessary to make sure that all downstate results can be overcome. With the new Drivers License Law for the over 250,000 estimated illegals who drive today without a license there is no longer any need to protect the integrity of a System that is utterly corrupt in all aspects. Add to this the rigged candidacy system and one can see why only the criminals or should one say party members get on a ballot. Lets put it even more succinctly the Public Sector operations are worse then Russian operations that are Mafia based. But remember all this done for the children and the Public Safety, Health and Welfare that is the greatest scam line in the history of the World and it allows the endless rape and robbery of the taxpayers.

      I think early voting also skews elections. I voted early this year and was astounded at the huge, huge crowds. It was a madhouse in the room where I voted and the election judges seemed quite elderly and confused. I saw older people sitting at machines being “helped” by a spouse (both reading the screen). Is this legal? There was so much commotion in that room that I’ll bet people could have voted twice and no one would be the wiser. Also, I don’t think people should vote before the debates or a month early. So much can happen in a month.
