Private School Pay Struggles vs Public School Strikes

Private vs Public SchoolThe start of the upcoming new year appears to starting the same way this years is going out, with more teacher union strikes. The 2012 school year thus far has brought us strikes in:

  • Chicago
  • Lake Forest
  • Evergreen Park
  • Highland Park
  • Carperntersville
  • Prairie Grove

Several other districts have already set strike dates for the upcoming year:

  • West Chicago – Jan 7
  • Grayslake – Jan 16
  • Barrington – Jan 20

Then we have the opposite stories where private schools in this economy are struggling. Some are skipping or delaying payrolls, some are closing because less and less parents can afford to send their children there because of the tough economic times. This is a stark contrast against the unions forcing their workers out on strike for higher pay, while many of the private school workers are just happy to have jobs and do not worry about raises. They have to worry about their next paycheck being on time or getting one at all.

So if you are inclined to pray, please pray for these struggling schools. If you can afford it, please make a donation to a private school near you. It may be the best Christmas gift someone could receive this year.

I do not understand these strikes. Why are unions suddenly flexing their muscles in this economy? When budget deficits in Illinois are constantly in the news, what is wrong with these people? Where do they suppose the money will come from? The timing seems odd.

They hurt only the children – and the teachers who genuinely want to work with children. The AFT and the NEA need to be done away with.

Teacher’s Unions are no longer needed and define best the word ‘corruption’ (I said that i the nicest way possible……okay?? ;-) )

I agree that teacher’s unions are no longer needed, especially in Illinois where salaries are far higher than those in the private sector. I think people forget that teachers only work 180 days per year, so their annual salary needs to be divided by 180. For example, a teacher earning $100,,000 “per year” is actually paid $555 per day. Anyone making over $500 per day should not grumble if they have to work a few extra minutes or put in a little more effort.

Any time you have administration and Boards of Education demand increased hours of work, demand more production for less pay, appease the public through “political correctness” policies/laws, diminish the tools to perform duties, to fire teachers for any reason, evaluate teachers on things they cannot control, and demand higher and higher credentials on the teachers’ dime, you’re going to get some push-back from teachers. It may be overdone at times, but if teachers don’t lookout for, or defend, themselves, then who will do it?

    • concerned taxpayer

This is no different than the private sector. In the business world, employees are expected to do more for less pay and longer hours, and they don’t have guaranteed jobs with tenure like teachers do either. Since there are thousands of certified teachers (including new graduates) who are desperate for teaching jobs, my response is: if you don’t like it, quit. There are thousands of people who would be thrilled to have the jobs and willing to invest the time and energy that administrators (and the public) want.

The Parochial and Private School Systems are exemplary in every aspect of an Education operation. They produce superb outcomes for their students and operate well below the $7K per student annual cost. They represent what free market competitive operations can produce. Compare this to the massively bloated Public Education Systems where there is a minimum 50% over staffing and compensation level plus their millionaire pension scam and you see why the taxpayers are being bankrupted with oppressive taxation levels and the private economy is being destroyed as well as the entire nation. When one examines these Public Sector operations one sees an operation cost that is 300% to 500% above a necessary budget operation and yet it produces mediocre outcomes even after watering down its measurement criteria. The fraud in these operations mimics that in the entire Public Sector today, and its costs have reached astronomical levels that cannot be sustained by the private sector. The collusion between the Politicians and the unions of these operations has created numerous mandates in order to attempt to protect and codify the fraud to prevent any competition from correcting the dysfunctional Public Education Systems. Just as we see at the Federal Level where a $2.4 Trillion annual budget would suffice ( $800 Billion Social Security, $500 B Medicare, $500B Defense, $200B Debt Interest plus $400B for operations = $2.4 Trillion ) but we find ways to spend nearly $3.8 Trillion annually to prop up inefficient, unnecessary operations and dole out the cronyism the friends of the party expect. There is a reason why all the 23 million Public Sector employees are millionaires at retirement with over 85% of their final inflated salary annually for life. The average Federal Employee cost is over $140K annually and the state and local operations are not much different. Compare this to the median income of $42K and you begin to see who is living like Kings and Queens in this country off the labor of the taxpayers. All one has to do is examine the Public Sector Labor Agreements and fraud is the only description possible for what is being done to the taxpayers. Unfortunately the dysfunctional Public Education System serves the Political Class and its friends well as they rape and rob the taxpayers worse than even King George did.
