The Machine: The Truth Behind Teachers Unions

Via Reason TV

America’s public education system is failing. We’re spending more money on education but not getting better results for our children.

That’s because the machine that runs the K-12 education system isn’t designed to produce better schools. It’s designed to produce more money for unions and more donations for politicians.

For decades, teachers’ unions have been among our nation’s largest political donors. As Reason Foundation’s Lisa Snell has noted, the National Education Association (NEA) alone spent $40 million on the 2010 election cycle (source: http://reason.org/news/printer/big-education-and-big-labor-electio). As the country’s largest teachers union, the NEA is only one cog in the infernal machine that robs parents of their tax dollars and students of their futures.

Students, teachers, parents, and hardworking Americans are all victims of this political machine–a system that takes money out of taxpayers’ wallets and gives it to union bosses, who put it in the pockets of politicians.

Our kids deserve better.

The Public Education System like the Public Sector in its entirety is absolute fraud on the taxpayers. This Education System costs over 50% more than is necessary for an excellent Education as demonstrated today in all the private and parochial operations. The Public Sector Labor Agreements put the outright fraud in black and white. The collusion of the Politicians and the unions have created this system for their mutual benefits. It is time for a Voucher System that limits the cost per child to $7K annually to put a cap on this operation. We should be moving all the junior high Education into a Virtual School System allowing all students to be taught by the Subject Matter Expert and having thousands of non-repeating exercises in all subjects to measure comprehension. The progression will be based on competency rather than age and calendar year. This would cut the operational costs by over 70% of today’s ridiculous costs. But most importantly provide the students with a 21st Century Education. This would immediately cut all property tax bills by 50%. Also all the Public Sector Labor Agreements should be approved at the ballot box during normal elections for it is obvious that the elected representatives cannot be trusted to represent the taxpayers. There should also be an immediate reform of the entire Public Sector Pension System because this fraud has created a $50 Trillion obligation on the backs of the taxpayers for the 23 million Public Sector employees for their millionaire retirement packages. If this is not addressed quickly then the US will default in the near term and it will resolve this issue.
