Pat Quinn 2014 State of the State: We Made a Comeback, Jobs are Being Created, Companies are Moving Here

In listening to Gov. Pat Quinn give the 2014 State of the State address today, it is clear he is as delusional as President Obama was last night in his State of the Union address.  He continually repeated the following themes:

  • We’ve made a comeback
  • Getting the job done
  • Finish the job
  • Equality and fairness

Governor Quinn talks about the mess he inherited and goes on to claim we have made a comeback from the economic downturn and the credibility gap.  He actually said that he has restored integrity to state government.  He must be ignoring all the latest scandals like metra, Jesse White’s staffer fraud, and the prison official 2 dozen arrest scandals.

Quinn talks about cutting spending by over $1 Billions, but doing it with compassion so as to take care of the most vulnerable.

During this segment, Quinn also brags about same-sex marriage and “fixing” pension reform as historic and that it stopped the bleeding.

While Gov. Quinn acknowledges IL has a way to go on jobs, he talk about how much the unemployment rate has dropped and how many jobs have been created compared to the fellow midwest states. Here are some of the job facts he left out:

Quinn laid out his 5 year jobs blueprint on how to start fix this mess.  He proposed the following:

  • Executive order to create a Small Business advocate.  Yes, he’s creating another government job.
  • More minority set asides in gov’t contracting
  • Launching Veteran training programs
  • More government spending “investments” to pander to unions and big business
  • Double MAP grants to put more students into college
  • Expand conservation internship programs

In addition Quinn talks about the foreign companies moving into Illinois, but failed to mention the companies moving out of Illinois because of the high taxes and overly restrictive regulations.

Gov Quinn calls for more spending with his plans for a Birth to 5 Initiative.  The 5 items in the plan are:

  1. Pre-natal care
  2. Early childhood education (Euphemism for universal Pre-K)
  3. Parent Services
  4. Building the middle class by helping people stay in their homes
  5. Healthcare

The statistics provided for his justification of early childhood education were really more of an indictment of the failure of the state’s public school system.  They are a justification for education choice instead of more government spending on failed system bureaucracies.  In fact when discussing education he claimed he has empowered parents because they now have better report cards to compare the failing public schools.  Note: if you want to truly empower parents, allow them to choose the best fit school for their child instead of being assigned to a school by a government bureaucrat.

In the final segment of the speech Quinn cals for more job killing mandates on business.

  • Minimum wage increase to at least $10/hr.  His justification was that these people spend it immediately putting money into the economy.  What he fails to mention is the this takes money out of the business themselves decreasing what they have to spend.  In addition, businesses will cut jobs due to these increased costs.
  • Calls for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) increase
  • Calls for mandatory 2 days paid sick leave for all workers

  1. concerned taxpayer says:

I don’t know what planet this guy is living on. As to raising the minimum wage….my son commented that there’s no point in going to college if you can earn $10/hour with a high school diploma.

  2. Incompetence, Communism, corruption and crime at its best here. The thing amazing here is that there are either enough criminals in the Public Sector and slaves to elect these criminals or the Public Education System has achieved it goal of creating a non-thinking, handicapped, dependent class of citizens.
