Chick-fil-A: A Lesson in the Intolerance of Tolerance

What did Dan Cathy, COO of Chick-fil-A actually say about the company’s support of the traditional family:

Some have opposed the company’s support of the traditional family. “Well, guilty as charged,” said Cathy when asked about the company’s position.

“We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.

“We operate as a family business … our restaurants are typically led by families; some are single. We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that,” Cathy emphasized.

“We intend to stay the course,” he said. “We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.”

Notice there was no mention of being anti-gay. He was strictly talking about how they believed and stressed that they operate their business on biblical principles and the traditional biblical family. However, since his statement, many advocates of same-sex marriage have called Chick-fil-A anti-gay and accused them of discrimination. These statements have been at the forefront of the Mayor of Boston, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Alderman Joe Moreno.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino in his own words:

Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston. You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population. We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion. That’s the Freedom Trail. That’s where it all started right here. And we’re not going to have a company, Chick-fil-A or whatever the hell the name is, on our Freedom Trail… If they need licenses in the city, it will be very difficult — unless they open up their policies.

Chicago Mayor Emmanuel stated:

“Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values,” the mayor said in a statement when asked about Moreno’s decision. “They disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents. This would be a bad investment, since it would be empty.”

Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno accused the company of discrimination.

Ald. Proco “Joe” Moreno announced this week that he will block Chick-fil-A’s effort to build its second Chicago store, which would be in the Logan Square neighborhood, following company President Dan Cathy’s remarks last week that he was “guilty as charged” for supporting the biblical definition of marriage as between a man and woman.

“If you are discriminating against a segment of the community, I don’t want you in the 1st Ward,” Moreno told the Tribune on Tuesday.

To my knowledge, the company has never been accused of discrimination, so his statement is false. I do suspect though, given the militant push by some of the same-sex marriage proponents, there will be false discrimination claim initiated very soon.

Mayor Emmanuel, Alderman Moreno, and Mayor Menino are acting like bullies. They are clearly discriminating against a business because of the owners Christian beliefs, not because of any actions by the company. They are also attempting to use their power of government to stop a company just because they disagree with their religious beliefs. Again, this is discriminatory and a violation of the First Amendment. Secondly , it is a blatant abuse of power.

What are the Chicago values, Mayor Emmanuel says Chick-fil-A does not have? Is it the corruption, regular gang killings, 50% high school graduation rate, fiscal irresponsibility and high debt? Why does Mayor Emmanuel welcome the help of Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan, who also opposes same-sex marriage, but is against Chick-fil-A? Is he just anti-Christian? Or anti-family?

Lastly, it shows the hypocrisy of these men. In the name of tolerance, they are being intolerant and discriminatory of the views of others. They don’t want a discourse, they want total capitulation of what Dan Cathy believes. This should be Exhibit A when teaching the churches and others, the intolerance of tolerance. What religious views will Mayor Emmanuel or Mayor Menino discriminate against next?
